An information phone line has been established by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) following the Ashmore boat explosion.
People who may have known someone on board or are trying to contact friends injured in the explosion on April 16 should phone the information line 1300 735 683.
DIAC established the phone line in a bid to help connect those whose family members or friends might be involved in the tragedy.
“Our primary focus is the health and well-being of the individuals involved in the boat explosion and we would urge anyone concerned that their loved ones may have been on board, to contact the information line,” a DIAC spokesman said.
“All calls will be treated confidentially and information provided may help identify those who are injured and recovering in hospital.”
The tragedy off Australia’s north-west coast last week claimed the lives of five people and dozens more are being treated for severe burns after their boat exploded and sank.
Interpreters are available for the phone service which will be available between 9am and 5pm Australian Eastern Standard Time.
Overseas callers can phone +61 2 62641001 for assistance. International call charges apply.
Broadcast quality audio in English, Dari and Farsi is available online from the newsroom.
