Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) staff put their wallets and stomachs behind a good cause today, with the annual Pink Ribbon Breakfast for staff raising $4000 for the Cancer Council ACT.

The breakfast, which has previously raised almost $10 000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), aims to increase awareness of the importance of research and its role in breast health.
Staff at the DIAC national office in Canberra were cooked breakfast from 8:00am by senior executives, including Secretary Andrew Metcalfe.
“The Pink Ribbon Breakfast gives staff the opportunity to get involved and help raise money for such a worthy cause while having some fun,” Mr Metcalfe said.

“I would like to thank the Orange Bean café and the department’s social club, which donated the 20 kilograms of bacon, 180 eggs, 30 loaves of bread, 50 tubs of fruit salad and 10 kilograms of sausages for the breakfast.”

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Australia, with one in eight women diagnosed with the disease before the age of 85.

“The department is proud and delighted to support the work of the Cancer Council ACT with a fundraising breakfast,” Mr Metcalfe said.

“It gave staff an opportunity to witness the culinary talents of senior staff, while also helping the council,” he added.

The Cancer Council ACT is a non-government not-for-profit community organisation that aims to promote a healthier community by reducing the incidence and impact of cancer in the ACT region.

The council depends largely on the generosity of the ACT and surrounding community providing donations and supporting fundraising initiatives.

Pink Ribbon Day (Monday October 26) is the signature day of the NBCF. Throughout October, the Pink Ribbon campaign aims to celebrate the achievements of breast cancer research and raise additional funds.
