First transfer to Papua New Guinea completed
The Department of Immigration and Citizenship has confirmed the first group of irregular maritime arrivals has arrived at the Manus Island Regional Processing Centre in Papua New Guinea today.
A charter flight, with 19 people from Sri Lanka and Iran, and escorted by the Australian Federal Police (AFP), DIAC staff, interpreters and medical staff, departed Christmas Island at 11pm AEDST late yesterday.
The group landed in Manus Province early today.
All of the people in the group arrived after August 13 and were therefore subject to transfer to a regional processing country.
Further details will be made available later today.
