The first stage of the Pontville Immigration Detention Centre north of Hobart stands ready to receive the first 140 clients to be accommodated there. The first stage consists of seven old Brighton army huts which originally stood on the site which have been refurbished to provide dormitory-style accommodation with each one sleeping up to 20 people, and additional shared bathroom and recreation blocks. New kitchen facilities have been installed on the site, along with a dining room and medical facilities. The second stage of construction includes similar accommodation and supporting buildings for another 260 people. It is due to be completed, weather and availability of tradesmen and materials permitting, around the end of September.
