Cooking Workshops

There's an innovative settlement support program for African refugee
students and their families being cooked up in Queensland.
Funded through DIAC's settlement grants program, Nutrition Australia is
running cooking and nutrition workshops at Junction Park State School in
Annerley, which has about 60 African students, most from a Burundian
background.
The workshops were started when it was noticed some of the students were
bringing unhealthy food to school for lunch, as their families were
unfamiliar with shopping for western food.
Now the workshops are up and running, they not only provide support for
healthy eating but also give important links for the families to a whole
range of support services, as well as an opportunity to improve their
English skills - all the while having a great time in the kitchen.
